Madam Marie: How Can I Get a Cheating Husband To Act Right?

Dear Madam Marie,

For the past eleven years I have been married to the nicest man man you could possibly imagine. He’s good natured owns his own successful business and is an excellent provider for me and our three children. In fact, he would be the perfect husband if it weren’t for one glaring personality shortcoming that he has been cursed with. That is that he is prone to drinking excessively with his friends on the weekends and the result is that he has gotten into fairly serious trouble as a result.

To date, he has been arrested once for drunk driving and I personally know about five times he has spent the night in local motels with hookers that he finds through Internet based call girl services. I don’t think that he is a cheater per se in that if it weren’t for his drinking I feel that the incidents with the prostitutes wouldn’t have happened. Madam Marie please tell me how I can get my cheating husband to act right?

Sincerely,
Confused Debra

People Do Some Pretty Stupid Things When They are Drunk

Listen honey, I read your letter carefully and it is obvious to me that you love your husband very much and want your family to stay together. While the cheating can’t be entirely blamed on his drinking problem, I do believe that people are generally inclined to do some pretty stupid things when they are drunk.

Your Husband Needs Help For His Drinking

Also, in light of the fact that you have caught him or at least found out about his liaisons with hookers in the local motels, as you say “five times”, he is either not very clever or as you say, drunk when it happens. Either way, you are going to have to convince your husband to get help with his drinking before he gets himself into real trouble.

He May Turn Out to Be a Sober and Far More Clever Cheater

Perhaps you are correct in your thinking that once he becomes sober, his cheating, which by the way is putting you in real danger, will stop. However; all too often it seems that if you sober up a drunken horse thief then you may find yourself stuck with a sober and more clever horse thief. I sincerely hope this isn’t your case.

Demand That He Seek Out Treatment For His Alcoholism!

The only way that you are going to find out though is to demand that he start attending local AA meetings, get a sponsor and begin working through a twelve step program. If he refuses to go then demand that he enter a live in treatment facility for alcoholics. If he refuses to do either of these then you can either leave him or put up with his disgusting shenanigans until he is finally arrested again for drunk driving and hit with a lengthy jail sentence.
